Your Ultimate Summer Guide to Tibet: What to See and Do

Explore Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries and Temples

Tibet’s monasteries and temples are the beating, spiritual heart of the region. Summer offers the most favorable conditions for exploring Tibet’s spiritual heart. In Lhasa, Potala Palace stands tall and majestic, overlooking the city as a former seat of the Dalai Lama. Just a short walk away, Jokhang Temple continues to draw devout pilgrims from all corners of the world.

Further afield, you’ll find places like Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse and Ganden Monastery perched on a ridge near Lhasa. These religious centers remain active homes to monks, daily rituals, and spiritual teachings. In summer, the warm weather is perfect for seeing the rhythms of monastic life. Stroll through the courtyards filled with the scents of incense, while the golden light brings out the fine details in centuries-old murals. It’s a great chance to connect with the rich spiritual traditions of Tibet.

Immerse Yourself in the Beauty of Tibet’s Sacred Lakes

Tibet’s lakes go beyond natural beauty and are deeply spiritual places that connect you with the unique landscapes. During summer, their frozen edges thaw, revealing otherworldly waters in vivid blues or greens. Namtso Lake, northwest of Lhasa, is one of the most striking. It stretches endlessly across the plains, reflecting the surrounding peaks and sky like a giant mirror.

Yamdrok Lake’s calm surface is a beautiful turquoise. Only 70km from Lhasa, it can be enjoyed both up close and from afar as a stunning panorama with the surrounding mountains.

Each lake has its own legends and is considered sacred by local Tibetans, many of whom come during the warmer months to walk the shoreline in prayer. For adventurous travelers, a visit to Lake Manasarovar near the base of Mount Kailash offers the chance to witness a place that holds spiritual meaning for Buddhists, Hindus, and followers of the Bon faith.

Attend Vibrant Traditional Tibetan Festivals

Summer is also festival season. Communities come together in celebration, filling monastery courtyards and grassy fields with music, dance, and color. One of the most anticipated events is the Shoton Festival, which takes place in August. It’s held at Drepung Monastery over seven days, and capped off with the unveiling of a massive thangka painting.

In Gyantse, horse riders show off their riding skills during the Horse Racing Festival, blending sport with tradition. Smaller, lesser-known festivals pop up across the region throughout the season, particularly at remote monasteries. These local gatherings are perfect for travelers seeking to understand Tibetan culture at its most lively and personal. Whether you’re watching Cham dances or joining families for outdoor feasts, the sense of community and devotion is always front and center.

Trek Amidst the Majestic Himalayas

Trekking the Himalayas is a great summer activity. High mountain passes are clear of sun from the warm weather, opening up all the best routes. Whether you’re aiming for an easy day trek or a multi-day pilgrimage route, there are choices for all kinds of travelers.

The popular Tingri to Everest Base Camp trek takes four days and ends with the most majestic sight in the region. Take the long route through the Gama Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. For a deep adventure, the kora around Mount Kailash is among the most sacred treks in Asia. Spanning about 52 kilometers, it’s physically demanding but spiritually rich, drawing pilgrims and trekkers from across the world.

Join Local Pilgrims for Meaningful Spiritual Experiences

In Tibet, spirituality extends beyond the monasteries and is woven into daily life. During the summer, pilgrims travel across the region to walk around sacred places on pilgrimages known as koras. You can join them on the routes for a deeply authentic window into Tibetan spiritual life.

In Lhasa, the Barkhor circuit surrounding Jokhang Temple is a popular kora. Pilgrims spin prayer wheels and chant mantras, and the air is thick with incense. Monastery Koras around famous places like Ganden, Sera, and Drepung Monastery can be completed in only a few hours while getting a deeper look at the surrounding countryside. Or, travel deep into Tibet for the spectacular Mount Kailash Kora. The three-day route is a profound experience.

Embark on a Scenic Road Trip Across the Tibetan Plateau

There’s no place in the world like Tibet for epic road trips across open landscapes. During summer, the roads are safe and accessible, letting you travel through the breathtaking landscapes, and over high mountain passes.

The classic and most popular route is from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp. It takes two days, and you can spend the night at EBC in sight of the awesome mountain. Travel the Friendship Highway to Nepal, and cross mountain passes as you descend to the lush forests around Gyirong. Other overland routes can take you across Tibet to bordering provinces, like through vibrant eastern Tibet to the rolling hills of Sichuan province, or through remote western Tibet to the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

Experience the Rich Nomadic Culture on Tibet’s Grasslands

The light summer rains bring the vast grasslands of Tibet to life. Nomadic herders move their yaks and sheep to the high pastures where the air is fresh and grazing is good. It gives you the chance to see a way of life that has changed little over the generations.

Qiangtang Prairie is one of the largest in China. Located between the Kunlun, Tanggular, and Gangdisi Mountains, the vast grasslands cover more than 600,000 square kilometers. In the Nagqu area of the prairies, you can visit nomadic families and be welcomed with traditional butter tea and stories of nomadic life. The experience of people living in tune with nature leaves a deep impression.
